Volunteer with the Hancock Rescue Squad!

Join Our Family as a Volunteer!

Do you have the passion and desire to volunteer? Have you ever heard a siren or seen a fire engine and wondered what was happening? Have you ever witnessed or come upon a motor vehicle accident and wished you could help? Have you been present when someone was stricken with a sudden illness and wanted to assist? Are you looking for new, lifelong friendships, challenges, and rewards? Do you want to become involved in your community?

If you have the desire to help your community during their most challenging times, please complete our application:

The fire and rescue service is one of the most diverse and challenging fields of work today. Many individuals are drawn to this field because of its variety. Emergency services offer action, excitement, and an adrenaline rush. Many individuals enjoy feeling wanted and needed. Others simply want to belong to a supportive community. Whatever motivates you to volunteer, everyone gains the satisfaction of being at their best when others are facing their worst. Imagine preparing yourself to cope with situations that range from structure fires to childbirth, hazardous chemical spills, heart attacks, and almost any imaginable emergency in between. This diversity, coupled with the fact that these skills may be needed at any time of the day or night, seven days a week, in any kind of weather, and often under potentially stressful and emotional circumstances, contributes to our profession being so personally rewarding.

We understand that fire and rescue is not for everyone. Volunteering in emergency services is one of the most important decisions you can make and requires serious consideration to join our family.

Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP)

The Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue participates in the "LOSAP," also known as the Length of Service Award Program. This program is exclusively available to volunteers within the county and not to paid employees of any department. You are eligible if you volunteer at one department and work for another; however, participation is only through the department where you currently volunteer.

The purpose of this program is to provide incentives for volunteers who risk their lives responding to calls for service. Some of the benefits of this program for qualified volunteers include, but are not limited to: disability, retirement, death benefits, and tax deductions.

To be eligible for this program, you must be an active volunteer with a department within Washington County, MD, complete your LOSAP application, and earn a minimum of 50 points each year. You must be a Maryland resident to qualify for the tax deduction. Points can be earned through various activities, such as training, station standby, responding to calls, and attending meetings. You must track your LOSAP points by completing the appropriate form, which can be found here.
